This film is based on a script which the late Akira Kurosawa had long hoped to bring to the screen. The project was completed posthumously by Kurosawa’s staff.

With the river in flood after heavy rains, a masterless samurai, Ihei, and his wife are stranded at a small country inn. He steps in to prevent a duel between two young samurai. The lord of the domain, Shigeaki, is impressed with Ihei’s skill and offers to make him fencing master to the fief. However, Ihei ends up by inadvertently knocking Shigeaki into his own garden pond.
